Fiegl + Spielberger is one of Austria's leading electrical engineering companies. Founded in 1927, the family-owned company employs around 600 people at ten locations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, providing solutions in the fields of electrical engineering, building automation, automatic doors, security technology, communications, and IT.

Reporting reacheasg its limits

Previously, Fiegl + Spielberger had been working with a traditional reporting tool that mainly provided list-based evaluations. As the volume of operational data grew, this solution increasingly became a bottleneck, resulting in slow performance and limited analytical flexibility. The company's heterogeneous data landscape included an AS/400 system, several SQL databases, SharePoint, and File. At the same time, it became apparent that the company wanted to introduce additional systems in the medium term to expand its system landscape. In order to make better use of its own database and evaluate it across systems, the company decided to use a modern, flexible BI platform.

Qlik Sense® impresses in selection process

Based on Gartner analyses, Fiegl + Spielberger evaluated three leading BI solutions. Qlik Sense® clearly came out on top thanks to its high performance, clear separation of data model and application level, numerous connectors, and a fully web-based architecture without local installations.

„Qlik® impressed us with its performance, the clear separation between the data model and application level, and the wide range of connectors," explains Pascal Moser, Head of Digitalization and Process Management. "It was also particularly important to us that the solution is browser-oriented, supports single sign-on, and can be operated both in the cloud and on our own servers. This covers our current and future requirements in the best possible way.“

ppmc provides support from proof of concept to rollout

Fiegl + Spielberger brought Qlik Channel Partner ppmc group on board as an implementation partner. The partnership began with a proof of concept in the procurement department. "A PoC not only shows whether a technology works, but also whether the collaboration is a good fit – that's crucial for project success," says Pascal Moser.

The proof of concept (PoC) confirmed expectations regarding speed, usability, and modeling capabilities. As part of a “train-the-trainer” approach, internal users were empowered to further develop dashboards independently. Qlik® was then gradually rolled out to other areas of the company.

Qlik® is used company-wide

Today, around 16 users actively use Qlik® as power users.

Purchasing:  Analysis of product and price trends over longer periods, early detection of cost increases, supplier comparisons, evaluation of order quantities and frequencies, and monitoring of delivery dates and reliability.

Sales:  Focus on revenue development; order opportunities and customer analysis; comparison of quotation and order data; evaluations by product group and region.

Management:  An integrated dashboard bundles key figures from purchasing, sales, and project business, providing management with an up-to-date overview at all times.

Other areas of application include:  vehicle fleet management, inventory analysis including historical tracking, inventory monitoring with short update intervals, and analyses of the use of mobile ordering processes on construction sites.

Report distribution is automated via Mail & Deploy, an add-on for Qlik® that allows reports to be automatically generated and distributed via email to defined recipient groups.

Future-proof architecture for data and reporting

Qlik® has noticeably changed the way data is handled at Fiegl + Spielberger. “Transparency has improved enormously. We can now analyze the areas in which we use it in a more targeted manner, react more quickly, and make more informed decisions,” emphasizes Pascal Moser. "Some colleagues talk about a real quantum leap in analytics.“

The architecture makes it possible to retain dashboards even when changing systems – only the connected data sources are replaced. "The frontend remains the same, so users don't have to adapt," says Pascal Moser.

Fiegl + Spielberger also remains flexible in terms of licensing: The company can switch between user-based and capacity-based models at any time, allowing it to adapt billing to current requirements.
